📍INTRODUCTION TO LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS

Q.1 Explain Types of Listening with Suitable Examples

Introduction

Listening is an important part of communication. It is not just hearing the words spoken by another person, but also understanding their meaning and responding properly. We use different types of listening in different situations. Some types help us understand information, while others help us understand people's feelings and opinions. There are nine main types of listening.

1. Appreciative Listening

Appreciative listening means listening for enjoyment and pleasure. We listen to something because we like it or find it interesting.
Example: Listening to our favourite song, music, poem, or an interesting story.

2. Comprehensive Listening

Comprehensive listening means listening carefully to understand the meaning of the information being given. It is mainly used when we want to learn something.
Example: A student listening carefully to a teacher's lecture in the classroom to understand a new topic.

3. Critical Listening

Critical listening means listening carefully and judging whether the information is correct, useful, or believable. We do not simply accept everything we hear.
Example: Listening to a news report and thinking about whether the information is reliable or not.

4. Discriminative Listening

Discriminative listening is the ability to identify differences between sounds, voices, tones, and ways of speaking. It is one of the basic forms of listening.
Example: Understanding whether a person is speaking happily, angrily, or sadly from their tone of voice.

5. Empathetic Listening

Empathetic listening means listening to understand another person's feelings and emotions. We try to understand the situation from the other person's point of view.
Example: Listening patiently when a friend is worried about an exam and trying to understand how they feel.

6. Informational Listening

Informational listening means listening to gain knowledge or information. The main purpose is to learn and remember important facts.
Example: Listening to instructions given by a teacher about an assignment.

7. Selective Listening

Selective listening means listening only to the parts of a conversation or speech that seem important or interesting to us. Sometimes we may ignore other information.
Example: A student listening to a long lecture but paying attention only when the teacher discusses important questions for the examination.

8. Reflective Listening

Reflective listening means listening carefully and then showing the speaker that we have understood what they said. We may repeat or explain their main point in our own words.
Example: If a friend says, "I am nervous about my presentation," we may reply, "You are worried about speaking in front of the class."

9. Therapeutic Listening

Therapeutic listening means listening to someone in a supportive and caring way so that the person feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings.
Example: Listening calmly to a friend who is going through a difficult situation and allowing them to express their feelings without judging them.

Conclusion

Listening is an essential skill in our personal, academic, and professional lives. The nine types of listening help us understand information, enjoy different forms of communication, judge ideas, and understand the feelings of others. A good listener knows which type of listening is needed in a particular situation. Therefore, developing good listening skills can make communication more effective and meaningful.

Q.2 Discuss Qualities of an Effective Speaker

Introduction

Speaking is an important part of communication. An effective speaker is not simply a person who can speak a lot. An effective speaker knows how to express ideas clearly, confidently, and in a way that the audience can understand. Good speaking skills are useful in classrooms, interviews, meetings, presentations, and everyday life. There are several qualities that make a person an effective speaker.

1. Confidence

Confidence is one of the most important qualities of a good speaker. A confident speaker can express ideas without unnecessary fear or hesitation.
Example: A student confidently presenting a topic in front of the class.

2. Clear Speech

An effective speaker should speak clearly. The words should be easy to understand, and the speaker should avoid speaking too fast or too slowly.
Example: During a presentation, a student speaks clearly so that everyone in the classroom can understand the topic.

3. Good Knowledge

A speaker should have enough knowledge about the topic. Good knowledge helps the speaker answer questions and explain ideas properly.
Example: Before giving a speech on environmental pollution, a student studies the topic and collects important information.

4. Good Pronunciation

Correct pronunciation makes speech easier to understand. A good speaker should pronounce words properly and clearly.
Example: A speaker using correct pronunciation while giving a formal speech.

5. Appropriate Voice and Tone

An effective speaker uses a suitable voice and tone according to the situation. The speaker should not use the same tone for every situation.
Example: A speaker may use an energetic tone while giving a motivational speech and a calm tone while explaining a serious topic.

6. Good Body Language

Body language includes facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and posture. Positive body language makes a speech more effective.
Example: A speaker maintains eye contact with the audience and uses natural hand movements while speaking.

7. Good Vocabulary

A good speaker should have a suitable vocabulary. However, using very difficult words is not always necessary. Simple and appropriate words can make communication more effective.
Example: A student explains a difficult idea using simple English so that all classmates can understand it.

8. Ability to Understand the Audience

An effective speaker understands the needs and level of the audience. The speaker changes the style of speaking according to the listeners.
Example: A student uses simple language while explaining a topic to school students.

9. Good Organization

A good speech should have a proper order. The speaker should introduce the topic, explain the main points, and finish with a conclusion.
Example: In a college presentation, a student first introduces the topic, then discusses the main points, and finally gives a conclusion.

10. Ability to Engage the Audience

An effective speaker keeps the audience interested. The speaker can use examples, questions, short stories, or interesting facts to maintain attention.
Example: A speaker asks the audience a simple question before explaining a topic.

11. Listening Ability

A good speaker should also be a good listener. Listening helps a speaker understand questions, opinions, and reactions from other people.
Example: During a group discussion, a student listens to others before giving their own opinion.

12. Proper Use of Time

An effective speaker respects the time given for the speech or presentation. The speaker should cover the important points without making the speech unnecessarily long.
Example: A student completes a ten-minute presentation within the given time.

Conclusion

An effective speaker combines confidence, clear speech, good knowledge, proper pronunciation, suitable body language, and good communication skills. A speaker should also understand the audience and listen to others. These qualities can be developed through regular practice and experience. Therefore, anyone can become a better and more effective speaker by improving these skills.
