Tenses: Explanation, Examples and Uses

Tense is a form of a verb that shows the time of an action or event. It tells us whether an action has happened in the past, is happening in the present, or will happen in the future. There are three main tenses in English: Present, Past and Future. Each tense has four forms.

1. Present Tense

Present tense is used for actions that happen now, regularly, or generally.

a) Simple Present Tense

Example: She goes to college every day.

Use: It is used for daily routines, habits, facts and general truths.

b) Present Continuous Tense

Example: She is studying English now.

Use: It is used for an action that is happening at the present moment.

c) Present Perfect Tense

Example: She has completed her homework.

Use: It is used for an action that has been completed recently or whose result is connected with the present.

d) Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Example: She has been studying for two hours.

Use: It is used for an action that started in the past and is still continuing.

2. Past Tense

Past tense is used for actions or events that happened in the past.

a) Simple Past Tense

Example: She visited her grandmother yesterday.

Use: It is used for an action that was completed in the past.

b) Past Continuous Tense

Example: She was reading a book when I called her.

Use: It is used for an action that was going on at a particular time in the past.

c) Past Perfect Tense

Example: She had finished her homework before dinner.

Use: It is used for an action that happened before another action in the past.

d) Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Example: She had been studying for two hours before her friend arrived.

Use: It is used to show an action that continued for some time before another past action.

3. Future Tense

Future tense is used for actions or events that will happen later.

a) Simple Future Tense

Example: She will visit her grandmother tomorrow.

Use: It is used for future actions, decisions, promises and predictions.

b) Future Continuous Tense

Example: She will be studying at 8 p.m.

Use: It is used for an action that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.

c) Future Perfect Tense

Example: She will have completed her homework by evening.

Use: It is used for an action that will be completed before a specific time in the future.

d) Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Example: She will have been studying for three hours by 9 p.m.

Use: It is used to show an action that will continue for a period of time up to a certain point in the future.
