Articles with Examples

Articles are words used before nouns to show whether we are talking about a particular person, place, thing, or something in general. In English grammar, there are three articles: A, An and The.

1. Indefinite Articles – A and An

A and An are called indefinite articles because they refer to a person or thing in a general or non-specific way.

Use of “A”

We use A before a singular countable noun that begins with a consonant sound.

Examples:

- I saw a dog in the street.

- She is a student.

- He bought a book.

Use of “An”

We use An before a singular countable noun that begins with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

Examples:

- She ate an apple.

- He is an honest man.

- I saw an elephant.

The choice between a and an depends on the sound, not simply the spelling. For example, we say an hour because “hour” begins with a vowel sound.

2. Definite Article – The

The is called the definite article. It is used when we are talking about a specific or already known person or thing.

Examples:

- I saw a dog. The dog was very cute.

- Please close the door.

- The sun rises in the east.

- She went to the library near her college.

We also commonly use the with unique things, such as the sun, the moon, and the earth.
