Q.1 Explain the main idea of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130. How does the poet describe his mistress differently from conventional love poetry?

INTRODUCTION :

William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130 is a famous poem in which the poet gives a realistic description of his mistress. The sonnet is different from traditional love poetry because Shakespeare does not use exaggerated praise or compare his beloved with beautiful things in nature. Instead, he describes her appearance honestly and in a humorous way.

In conventional love poetry, poets usually present their beloved as extremely beautiful and perfect. They compare the woman’s eyes with the sun, her lips with red coral, her cheeks with roses and her voice with beautiful music. Such descriptions often make the beloved appear almost unreal or goddess-like.

Shakespeare deliberately goes against this tradition in Sonnet 130. He says that his mistress’s eyes are not like the sun, and her lips are not as red as coral. He also says that her cheeks are not like roses and that her hair is like ordinary dark wires. Her voice is not sweeter than music, and her appearance does not follow the usual ideal standards of beauty.

However, Shakespeare is not insulting his mistress. His purpose is to show that genuine love does not depend on exaggerated descriptions or artificial comparisons. He accepts his beloved as she really is. In the final part of the sonnet, he makes it clear that his love for her is sincere and valuable, even though she does not resemble the perfect women described by other poets.
